the work formerly carried on in the Colony and it would, therefore, be lawful for the Trustees to dispose of the properties of those Societies with the approval of the Governor in Council and to hand over the proceeds to the duly authorised representatives of the Societies, with such reservations as are indicated in the memorandum and
correspondence enclosed.

I am informed that there would be great opposition to the Basel Mission being allowed to continue its work here on the same lines as formerly, and there is no need for it to do so. It has certain obligations in the Colony, which cannot conveniently be performed by the Trustees under the Ordinance, and for this reason it is proposed that to this limited extent the work of the mission should be carried on by ita representative, the Reverend August Nagel, the funds required being administered by special trustees appointed for the purpose. These trustees would investigate the large amount of property held by the mission and make recommendations as to the disposal of all of such properties as are not required for the special work referred to.

I should be glad to have your approval of these proposals, which I feel sure are in the best interests
of the Societies.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient humble servant,
i &. Statts
Governor, &c.
